Duke's
original name was John Wayne until his foster parents renamed
him. He now lives with his loving new family near Kilmarnock.
Welcome
Thank
you for your interest in becoming a GRREAT foster home. Foster
homes are a vital part of SEVA GRREAT, Inc. The number of
dogs we can take in is determined by the number of foster homes
available. We are always in need of foster homes.
We know
you will find that being a foster home is a rewarding experience.
All of our foster homes have expressed a sense of satisfaction
upon seeing their foster dogs adopted into permanent and loving
homes.
More
Details
SEVA GRREAT
provides all veterinary care necessary
while in foster care, including heartworm and flea/tick preventative.
Each dog has had a physical examination by a veterinarian. All
of the dogs coming from SPCA's or an unknown background are placed
in a separate quarantine kennel for 10 to 15 days and treated
if necessary before being placed in foster homes that have other
animals.
We ask
that you provide the same care and love to your foster Golden
as you would your own dog. We do require that the dogs not
be "kennel dogs" and have as much house time as possible
for proper evaluation of temperament and problems. You will need
to keep the dog flea/tick free, administering any required medication
and trim toenails and the hair on his feet. A SEVA GRREAT volunteer
will be glad to show you how.
Your primary
job is to integrate the foster dog into your home, giving it
love and limits. You will have the assistance of the Foster Coordinator
and others to help you with any problems that occur.
If you
have vacation plans, the Foster Coordinator will find the foster
dog a temporary home until you return.
Once the
foster dog is healthy, happy and secure, you will be asked to
bring your foster dog to each Golden Day (our version of an open
house) each month. Golden Day gives the public an opportunity
to meet and ask questions about our dogs as well as to learn
more about the Rescue. Arrangements can be made to transport
the dog if you can not attend.
When an
approved adoptive family is interested in your foster dog, they
will call to set up an appointment with you to visit the foster
dog. We ask that you bathe and brush your foster dog before
the visitors arrive. Please tell them all the positive and
negative things you have observed about the foster dog. Do not
omit any behavior or medical problems the foster dog may have.
Also ask questions to ascertain that they are the best match
for your foster dog.
When an
adoption has been approved, you will be given at least 24 hours
notice to prepare the dog for adoption. Preparation includes
bathing and making sure the dog a sufficient supply of any medications.
