 How to

 Adopt

Our Goldens

This is a partial list of the dogs we have available for adoption.  There is no guarantee how long each dog will remain available, but the list is typical of the dogs we normally have available for adoption.

RATHER THAN WAITING UNTIL YOU SEE A GOLDEN POSTED THAT YOU ARE INTERESTED IN, WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU COMPLETE THE ADOPTION APPLICATION as soon as possible. THE APPROVAL PROCESS COULD TAKE SEVERAL WEEKS.  By the time your application process is completed, many of the Goldens you see on this web site will have been adopted.

We have dogs coming into SEVA GRREAT and being adopted out every week.  So, it is impossible to keep this list completely accurate.  Golden Days Open House is held each month.  Although no dogs are actually adopted out at these public events, it is an excellent way to see the dogs and talk to the foster family about each dog.  We cannot guarantee which dogs will be at the Golden Days Open House.

If you are interested in any of the dogs on this listing, please select the option "How to Adopt" on the left hand side of this page.

In order to adopt one of our Goldens, you must live in our service area, which is limited to Southeastern Virginia.  If you live elsewhere, we recommend you check the nationwide list of Golden Retriever Rescues, which is maintained on the Golden Retriever Club of America-National Rescue Society and Golden Retrievers in Cyberspace websites.

FENCED IN YARD - All dogs need a fenced in yard.  Active dogs need an area large enough to really run and stretch their legs.

SENIOR PROGRAM - Available for dogs 9 years and older.  This program allows dogs to be adopted with a reduced adoption fee.

BAILEY 9-10-year-old spayed female

Bailey is a senior female who is a good family dog. She was turned into a shelter when her family lost their home. We were initially told at the shelter that she was 12, but our vet estimates she is closer to 9 or 10! She is good around kids and tolerant of other dogs. She loves to collect balls and put them in a pile, especially playing around the pool! She also likes to play tug-o-war with old socks! Bailey is house broken. Bailey likes to car ride and is good on a leash. Bailey is a little stiff when she stands up from laying for a while but once she is up she walks and runs around. Her arthritis is there but she still gets around pretty good! She is on a joint supplement and an arthritis medicine to help her! Bailey needs a sweet home for her “Golden Years” !!!

CANDY CANE 2-3-year-old spayed female

ADOPTION PENDING

CARAMEL ("Mel") 11 year old neutered male (Updated)
If candy didn’t suffice this Valentine’s Day, maybe what you really need is Caramel! This sweet, loveable older gentleman is the perfect cuddler on those cold winter nights and he’s ready for anything you are! Do you like to watch TV? Mel says move over and make some popcorn! Do you like taking strolls through the woods? Mel asks – how far are we going? Are you going on a road trip? Mel loves to ride in the car! Like many active older adults, Mel’s medicine cabinet has a few items. He takes a thyroid pill, an anti-stroke medication and a very low dose steroid to help him with skin allergies. Mel’s vet has taken x-rays, blood tests, EKGs, blood pressures and can’t find any reason for the facial seizures he had early in 2010. Perhaps, it is just a factor of getting older. If you would like to share Mel’s golden years, you will be rewarded many times over with his love, smiles and zest for life. This funny little guy will be your best friend and most faithful companion.

DAWSON 7-year-old neutered male
Just one look at those loveable, big brown eyes and your heart will melt. Dawson came from a home of neglect and was malnourished. He was severely underweight –weighing only 47 lbs when he came to the rescue. But, with proper nutrition, he is rapidly gaining weight. He experiences a skin disorder and hair loss from a suspected allergy to fleas or food. Currently, he is being fed a premium dog food to eliminate the possibility of food allergy.
Dawson loves to talk! He has a very special way of vocalizing his love for you. He will climb into your lap and begin to moan and yip with happiness. He is fully house broken and has full run of the house. He loves to go for rides anywhere, anytime. He even enjoys going to the vets! Dawson loves to play ball! He brings it back to you and will drop it at your feet. If you don’t immediately pick it up; he’ll once again pick it up and drop it even closer. He will repeat this until you throw the ball!! Also, Dawson will happily climb into a bathtub to take baths! He is always ready to go for a walk! He pulls at first but does settle down. He is so eager to please!
He seems to get along well with every dog he meets. He was thrilled to meet his foster sister – even though she wasn’t as thrilled to meet him. But, once they came to an understanding – they have been inseparable! It is unknown how he will do with small children or cats as there are none in the foster home. Dawson is such a sweet boy – he has been through so much and deserves to have a home where he will be spoiled rotten! Don’t you want to spoil him rotten? He will wiggle his way into your heart forever!

GRETCHEN 12-year-old spayed female
Gretchen is a 12 year old Golden who is very loving. She follows her foster mom from room to room and loves to be petted and have her belly scratched. She has a lot of energy for an old girl. Gretchen loves people and will greet all visitors with a lot of enthusiasm, wagging her tail and trying to talk to them while getting them to pet her. She particularly loves children. Her foster mom's granddaughters, ranging in age from 1 to 15, come over often and she is always very excited to see them. Gretchen gets along with other dogs and cats. When she wants to play with the cats she will gently nudge them with her nose. Gretchen is house broken and does not get on the furniture even when no one is home. She follows some simple commands such as come, sit and stay but expects a treat for doing so. She can also give a "high five". Her previous family said that she is very protective of her food but (so far) we have not seen this (yet!). She will counter surf and get into the trash and litter box. Gretchen loves to go for rides in the car and walks well with a halti collar to keep her from pulling. Gretchen is on Phenobarbital, an inexpensive medication for seizures. Gretchen has some mild arthritis in her hips but gets around easily and does not seem to be in pain. She had a haircut but has a gorgeous coat that is growing back in. Gretchen will make someone a very loving companion.

GILES 9-week-old male
Giles is a lovable 8 pound ball of fluff, with a spunky nature!  His mother was a golden, but his father's breed is unknown.  Even at his young age, Giles has shown us that he is confident, determined, adventurous and adjusts well to new situations! At just 7 weeks old, Giles was diagnosed with Parvo, which was very scary for everyone but Giles!  He fought the illness with gusto and came out alive and ready to make up for lost time!   His vet says he is ready to find his forever family.  Some of his favorite activities are climbing, chewing, and feisty rough housing with his 3 year old foster brother.  Giles is successfully potty training and definitely understands that potty is for outside.  He still needs to be taken outside frequently, and accidents should definitely be expected throughout the potty training process.  Giles is a fast learner and already knows sit and is learning down.  Giles would do well with a forever family that has a way to let him out frequently throughout the day and that will enjoy directing his curiosity, energy and boldness toward training and healthy exercise!  When out on walks, Giles's outgoing personality and handsome good looks make everyone swoon, meet him and you will too!

JAKE 2-year-old neutered male
Meet two-year-old Jake. Jake was an owner-surrender and was heartworm positive. He has recently completed his heartworm treatments and has been doing very well. Jake has learned some manners since coming to SEVA GRREAT. He will sit politely while waiting for his dinner. Upon entering the house, he has learned to sit and wait to have his muddy feet wiped. Jake will take the initiative to keep your favorite spot on the furniture warm, and he will obey the “off” command. He has full run of the house without exhibiting any destructive behavior when left alone and can routinely hold up to nine hours. Jake also enjoys riding in a minivan. He is crate-trained, but prefers being close to his foster dad. He walks well on leash with occasional excursions to check out interesting smells, but is a perfect angel when he’s wearing a Gentle Leader.
Jake’s ideal forever home should have a 6-ft fence with an experienced dog owner who can be firm and consistent with this spirited lad. Jake can be agitated with small children; so should only go to a mature family. Jake also exhibits strong prey drive and should only be placed with a home without small animals. He also dislikes unfamiliar dogs approaching too close too quickly; so he will require a diligent handler to guide him through proper introductions to new dogs. Unlike typical goldens, Jake can be guarded and barks assertively when strangers approach, yet he will warm up to new people after a proper introduction.
Jake is very sweet with his foster dad and has bonded wonderfully with his foster brother. He craves attention like most goldens and responds very well to positive reinforcement. If you can provide a structured environment and continue with his obedience regiment, Jake is your man. He will repay you with joyous wiggles when you come home, quiet snuggles before bedtime, slobbery kisses whether you like it or not, and most of all - unconditional devotion - forever.

JESSIE 1-year-old spayed female (Updated)
Dreary winter blahs got you down?  What you need is a blast of Jessie.  Her bright, sparkling personality combined with endless, bouncing, puppy energy is a glow of warm sunshine. Her sweet nature is portrayed  by her twinkling soft brown eyes and her need to hug and kiss everyone she meets.  Her sweeping golden tail wags are a weapon of mass affection. After her morning constitutional, she will bound into the house looking for people to hug.  After everyone has been kissed, she will race for the toy box and dig for a favorite. Then it's off on a tear around the house, upstairs, down, back and forth.  Nothing is safe. Rugs fly, water bowls spill.  Her joy is delightfully infectious. She simply will not allow a dark cloud in her house.
Jessie came to SEVA GRREAT because of conflicts with young children in her previous home.  It's something of a mystery because she has displayed no people aggression while with her foster family.  However this is a very cautionary matter.   In addition to her history, she is a very tall girl; her enthusiasm can easily overwhelm even a grownup.  Very young children in a potential family would have to be considered very carefully.
When left alone for extended periods she will sometimes, out of boredom, find something to chew. Shredded magazines are her specialty.  She covers her crime with an enthusiastic, bouncing welcome home. Hugs and kisses all around and then expressions of shock and ignorance about the mess.   She does tolerate a crate which can serve to save house and home until she matures.
She has a wonderful relationship with the foster family's two male dogs.  She doesn't back away when they want what she has, but she doesn't cause trouble.  She wants to play constantly and they of course want to kick back on the couch and watch the ball game on TV. Somehow they reach agreement without argument. She will frequently play by herself by tossing a favorite toy or ball  and dashing about.  She lopes and leaps around the back yard like a gazelle on the plains.  Unlike many goldens she will actually chase and return a ball, allowing it to be thrown again.  After the romping she can be very cuddly and loving - She's a big girl but she'll crawl in your lap if you will let her.
She is a very bright girl. She was taught and will respond quickly to hand commands to sit and lie down. That is remarkable for any dog but amazing for a one year old puppy.  She will thrust her nose onto the dinner table with her most pathetic expression hoping to scam a sympathetic handout.  She is easily discouraged though, and will eventually lie down and pray for spillage.  A sharply delivered "NO" is a source of amusement to her.  She knows what it means but pretends its a silly human thing to be ignored.  Jessie is well house broken and will ask to go out although sometimes its hard to know if she's asking to go out, for a bite of your sandwich or just wants to trade you a kiss on the nose for an ear rub.
Jessie will become the love of your life on first sight.  She just cannot hide her brimming, unlimited affection for people and life. She will grab your heart and race away with it.  Her ideal family would be able to give her lots of exercise, attention and company through the day.  A course of obedience training will serve her and her family well.  Older children who would play and exercise with her would be wonderful.  Jessie has a lot of innocent rascal in her but the "sugar and spice and everything nice" formula applies very well.

LOUIE 7-year-old neutered male
Louie is a very lovable 7 year old neutered male who thrives on love and attention. He is believed to have an atrophic muscular disorder, possibly muscular dystrophy, which causes him great difficulty walking and maintaining his balance. In addition, he has instances of inappropriate drooling and trembling, as well as night vision difficulties. Louie has made great strides since he came to his foster home in April. He is healthier and active now. He loves his stuffed toys and is able to throw them high in the air and catch them (sometimes). He has developed an intense interest in UPS trucks—he barks at them and will pull his leash in an attempt to go after one while we are out walking. His bark is more like a howl than a bark and I have to laugh when he does this. I don’t know how he knows the difference between UPS and Fed EX but he does! Fed Ex gets no reaction from him at all! Louie goes to see his veterinarian Dr. Cooke on a regular basis. He goes every 2 weeks for acupuncture treatment which Dr. Cooke has graciously agreed to provide free of charge as long as it is helping his condition. The treatment is helping a great deal and Lou loves Dr Cooke and the staff. Lou is quite the “popular one” with them due to his winsome personality and affectionate attitude. Lou had 2 vacations this summer. He stayed with volunteer sitters here locally while we were out of town. He enjoyed both vacations and made some new human friends and 2 new canine buddies, Freckles and Toby. Freckles has a fish pond in his yard, of which, Lou took full advantage. His first dip in a fish pond! Oh, the smell of it! Well, you know what they say, “A dog has gotta’ do what a dog has gotta’ do!” Lou requires a lot of attention to thrive but it is time well spent. He loves you so completely and is totally devoted and loyal in return. Lou’s forever home ideally would be one in which attention would be shared by only one other dog at the most. He grows more affectionate each day and there is never a time I can look at him without smiling. I smile because I know he is happy and I know how much he deserves to be happy. Despite his handicap, he is able to enjoy life! What a “trooper!”

PEBBLES & BAM BAM 12-year-old neutered male and
12-year-old spayed female

Update: Pebbles and Bam Bam don’t act their age! They take US on walks using a double leash and are so frisky that they prance and wrap themselves around mailboxes. Sometimes they don’t “get” the restrictions of walking on leash! They are funny puppyish partners who adore their foster sisters and brother and are often found curled up back to back sleeping with one’s head across the other’s back. Though they are nearly deaf, when we wake them by surprise they are always happy and perky!

Pebbles and Bam Bam are 12 years old and are inseparable. They have been together since they were pups. For that reason, we are hoping to find a very special home that can accommodate them both. They do not act their age as they are quite spry and happy. They get along easily with other dogs and even enjoy wrestling with their foster siblings. Pebbles is heartworm positive but is active and has a good quality of life. We have decided to manage this by giving her Revolution rather than putting her through heartworm treatment at her age and she is doing well. Bam Bam is heartworm negative. Neither barks unnecessarily but they do whine for attention. They were grossly overweight but are nearing a healthy weight now and their coats are improving. What a beautiful pair.

SEBASTIAN 9-year-old neutered male

ADOPTION PENDING

TESSA 10-year old spayed female
If you’re looking for the perfect golden girl, look no further than 10 year old Tessa. Sweet, quiet and polite, Tessa wants little more from you than food and love. Her house manners are impeccable and she has never met a stranger. Like many seniors, Tessa has some arthritis in her hips which does slow her down a bit, so in addition to medications for allergies and her present infections, she will also need medication for her arthritis. For this reason, her perfect forever home will have few stairs and no rough play with her. Tessa's hearing has been damaged by persistent ear infections, and though she can't hear you call her, she can hear a loud clap, so that has become her cue when we want to get her attention, and she happily obliges. She really enjoys her crate, and although she can be left alone with the run of the house during a normal 8 hour work day, you will often return home to find her napping comfortably in her crate with the door open. She really comes alive when she sees a yellow tennis ball, and enjoys a short game of fetch. She gets along with absolutely everyone - canine, feline and human. There isn't a sweeter golden than Tessa!
